1. CHALLENGES

What are the challenges that your community is trying to address?

Get members of your community engaged in identifying some of the most significant challenges that your community aims to solve:

 
 
 
 

COMMUNITY

Get your community members engaged in identifying some of the most significant challenges they aim to solve.

People who have experienced challenges understand them best, which is why the knowledge and lived experience of your community can be so valuable.

Provide a spreadsheet for them to input their ideas, so you can keep a record.

 
 
 
 

RESEARCH

Ask members of your community to research into some of the key challenges.

There are some really good general resources available through global organisations, but it is worth members taking time to find some resources with more specific information.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
 
 

2. SOLUTIONS

It can help to identify some of the existing solutions to these challenges.

This ensures that your community does not replicate what has already been created, while understanding what the most effective solutions are, and discovering where the missing solutions might be.

 
 
 
 

COMMUNITY

As with exploring the challenges, get your community members involved in identifying existing solutions based on what they already know.

 
 
 
 

RESEARCH

Ask members of your community to research to find some of the most successful solutions.  

These might come from NGOs, governments or even companies.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
 
 

3. WE MEETUPS

These are a great way to take the learnings from the community and develop project ideas that solve the challenges they aim to address.

 
 
 
 

WHAT

We Meetups are online and offline meetups that enable members of a community to connect, develop ideas and form project teams (see Manage Community).

 
 
 
 

HOW

There are a range of online conferencing tools that you can use. Here are a few options and our thoughts - having used a lot of them!

Skype - it’s good because it’s free for calls with up to 9 people. But it can be unreliable and its functionality is quite limited.

Zoom - it’s only free for calls of up to 4 people, but if you pay a little bit you can set up video conferences and webinars with up to 100 people. You can even put people on the same call into different ‘rooms’, so they can discuss things in smaller groups.

 
 
 
 

STRUCTURE

It is important to get the most out of your We Meetups. They are a great opportunity to bring your community together and make it really start to feel like a community.

Here is the structure that we recommend for your We Meetups to ensure that you start to get some great ideas:

  • Build Teams - get people into teams of around 5 people.
  • Ideas - have people share general project ideas in their teams and choose one idea to work on.
  • Theory of Change - identify specific problems and how their project would solve them.
  • Plan - how they can turn that idea into a reality.
  • Super cool! - decide how they are going to present their idea in a way that will inspire people to support it.
  • Pitch - 3 minute pitches of their project ideas.
 

TIPS

Duration - If they are online, then anywhere between 1-2 hours is generally a good length.

For those offline, it can be good to have at least 2 hours so that people can go into more detail. As it's in person they are much less likely to feel disengaged.
