Bridging the Gap Between Internationals and Locals

HOW CHANGEMAKERS HELPED TURN AN IDEA INTO A PHYSICAL SPACE OF EMPOWERMENT

Bloom Tampere is an association in Finland dedicated to building a community where both internationals and locals can thrive together. The synergy, empowerment and support that is found at Bloom will enable each individual to integrate with ease into any culture. The services provided are integration support, workshops surrounding empowering themes, in addition to social events to strengthen networks, all in a cosy and safe environment 🇫🇮

HOW WE MAKE CHANGE

Bloom Tampere were looking for volunteers to help them with Finance, Legal and Fundraising in order to address the Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Partnership for the Goals (SDG 17).

Aleksander Tuckett 🇫🇮🇬🇧

‘My name is Aleksander and I am from Finland, but did my secondary education in the UK. In the UK, I made a lot of international friends and it allowed me to obtain an open and international mindset. I am currently still studying my third year of International Business at Tampere University of Applied Sciences. My professional experience has been in payroll at companies such as UPM and Kesko Oyj.

At Bloom I am now the Head of Finance. I have been using my skills to plan the pricing strategy for Bloom Tampere’s membership fees and prices for products being sold in the place. I’ve also taken part in events on behalf of Bloom which gave me valuable leads in gaining funding for the organisation. I’ve estimated cash flows for the organisation for grant applications and I have been making decisions about Bloom’s finances. 

The experience of working with the team at Bloom has been amazing! I am a part of an awesome team who are all inspired and ready to take up action in order to fulfil the mission and the vision of the organisation. By working with Bloom, I’ve learned about finances and fundraising in the startup sector as well as improved my team working skills. It has been an absolute pleasure working with such an energetic and passionate group of people!’

Pyry Peltonen 🇫🇮

‘My name is Pyry and I am an open-minded fellow from Lapland in northern Finland. I am fascinated by all things cultural and societal. The University of Helsinki was my home for six years before I stepped, as a Master of Arts, into the world of state administration. Since then I’ve been working in two ministries and a court. I am determined to continue in the public sector, to advance things that matter!

At Bloom I have been assisting in proofreading the final Finnish versions of different grant applications that Bloom was preparing. I fully support the goals of Bloom so I was motivated to do what I could to help them get funds. My background has equipped me with tools to assess cultural and social questions, and I have been working with a lot of different types of text. At Bloom, I could put these skills to good use!

It’s been inspiring to collaborate in formulating the grants that would convey the ideas and aims of Bloom as clearly as possible in my mother tongue. To do my small part in helping them to make a change. At the same time, I got the meaningful practice within the realm of fundraising. Thank you to the Bloom founders for this opportunity to work together!’

RESULT

Since Bloom became a We Make Change Member, they’ve now opened their space for the public in the heart of Tampere at Kehräsaari.
