Empowering Refugees to Communicate Through Art

DASCO

ABOUT

Design for Art & Social Change Organisation (DASCO) engages youth and communities in South Sudan with refugees in nearby countries through the incredible power of art. DASCO uses visual communication to realise social transformation by empowering refugees to use art to overcome the communication barrier with their new communities in the region 🇸🇸

HOW WE MAKE CHANGE

DASCO were looking for online volunteers to help them with Design, Events, Videography, Writing and Project Management, so they could empower even more refugees to share their experiences visually.

Here’s how ChangeMakers have helped 🙌

“THE EXPERIENCE FOR ME WAS PROFOUND”

‘My name is Mkyeku Onesmo Kisanga, I am currently a psychology student at the University of Lancashire. I am from the United Republic of Tanzania. Being diligent, pragmatic and prosocial has made me feel the need to volunteer and give back to society whenever I can. I generally volunteer with immigrants and refugees which led me to apply to become a volunteer for DASCO.

At DASCO, I have been designing and writing articles on my research on information related to COVID-19, its dangers, precautions and necessary measures to take in order to apprehend the danger refugees face in South Sudan.

The experience for me was profound, it made me learn so much information about COVID-19 and distinguish reliable sources from the unreliable in a time where the role of media is challenged.

Making a difference for refugees in South Sudan was satisfying given the restrictions and difficulties that they face. Mr. Chol (the Founder) has been a very good, diligent person clarifying any doubts or issues I had with the task given at hand.’

“WORKING WITH THE DASCO TEAM HAS BEEN INSPIRING”

Francis Magatti 🇹🇿

‘My name is Francis Magatti and I am from Tanzania. My main causes are climate action, democratization and human rights. I’ve always committed myself to supporting social ventures that transform society and address the challenges we face, especially here in Africa. This is what led me to apply to volunteer for DASCO .

At DASCO, I have been a project coordinator focusing on creating visual content for our different digital platforms, including animations and pictures. The content has been related to the empowerment of refugees in South Sudan. Working with the DASCO team has been inspiring and I’ve been happy to contribute with my skills.’
