Promoting Inclusion for People with Disabilities

HOW CHANGEMAKERS ARE HELPING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

Green Onyx Foundation is dedicated to supporting the holistic well-being of individuals living with or who are affected by disabilities. Their mission is to ensure, in the places where we work, that vulnerable populations living with disabilities are safe, supported and adequately cared for. They are committed to making an impact seeking inclusion and social justice for people living with disabilities on a national and international level ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

HOW WE MAKE CHANGE

Green Onyx Foundation was looking for volunteers to help them with Design, Marketing, Research, Project Management, Web Development and Fundraising in order to address their main Sustainable Development Goals of Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10).

We connected them with ChangeMakers from three different countries. Hereโ€™s how a few of them have helped ๐Ÿ™Œ

โ€œI FEEL IMMENSELY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE SKILLS THAT I AM DEVELOPING AT THIS STAGE OF MY CAREER CHANGEโ€

Camila Moura ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท

โ€˜My name is Camila and I am from Brazil. I grew up in a small town in the interior of Brazil, where information was difficult and there was a lack of a structure to support people who are less favored or with disabilities. Even today, there is a lot to improve. I moved to a bigger city and started to learn computer science, becoming an expert in how to apply machine learning to identify reliable information, in times where everyone has access to tons of information, but it's hard to identify which ones are trustworthy. In addition, it is important to know how all this information is received, which motivated me to study how to improve the user experience. I'm currently migrating career and for that, I've been studying techniques and inclusive applications of animation, motion design, illustration and others.

At Green Onyx Foundation, Iโ€™ve been responsible for AI design, where we have been aiming to aggregate useful information with an accessible and inclusive website. Iโ€™ve helped redesign it and adding new features which has required me to conduct research on similar organisations in order to make sure our site serve and integrate people with disabilities.

Through this project Iโ€™ve had the opportunity to experience the difficulties faced by people with different types of disabilities. In addition, I have developed a more critical and refined look, always considering the user's experience. I had the opportunity to work on the development of characters that represent some types of disabilities and that will be continuously developed as a means of reaching and attracting more people to the cause. I feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to showcase skills that I am developing at this stage of my career change.โ€™

โ€œIโ€™M HAPPY TO GROW MY SKILLS AND IMPACT THE LIVES OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.โ€

Mokhachane Mofolo ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

โ€˜My name is Mokhachane and I am from South Africa. I'm a freelance UX designer working remotely. I studied music but later pivoted to design. I've been designing websites and apps for the past 4 years. I enjoy working with purpose driven organisations, using design to help them grow their impact.

At Green Onyx Foundation, Iโ€™ve been creating a design system (design language) and brand guidelines to help everyone stay aligned and consistent while working on Green Onyx Foundation's content, brand, design, social media and website. I've also been doing user research to understand the needs of Green Onyx Foundation's website users and implementing them to the website.

The experience has been great. I've gained new interpersonal skills, working asynchronously with a fully distributed team. I'm happy to grow my skills and impact the lives of persons with disabilities.โ€™

โ€œI HAVE IMMENSELY ENJOYED VOLUNTEERING FOR GREEN ONYX FOUNDATION, BOTH BY HELPING VIA RESEARCH AND BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH I HAVE LEARNED IN THE PROCESSโ€

Kamila Soltynska ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ

โ€˜My name is Kamila and I am from Poland. Iโ€™m currently studying psychology at University College London. Iโ€™ve been quite excited about applying my skills and contribute to blossoming the disability inclusion and access space. I have experience in management and research from the field of education and sustainability. I also have extensive knowledge about human cognitive experience and Iโ€™m passionate about equity for humanity.

At Green Onyx Foundation, Iโ€™ve been supporting practice with theory and aided in the canalisation of tangible impact. As Global Research Manager, Iโ€™ve conducted ancillary research and information synthesis.

I have immensely enjoyed volunteering for Green Onyx Foundation, both by helping via research and because of how much I have learned in the process.
