Climate Action in Ghana

How ChangeMakers volunteered online to help reverse the effects of climate change in Ghana 🇬🇭

EcoWillow Ghana works to reverse the effects of climate change such as deforestation, chemically growing foods and address unsustainable living and the lack of environmental sustainability 🇬🇭

They do this through:

  1. Their Green School Project: committing 4 months to one school in climate action education, afforestation practices and thorough environmental sustainability education.

  2. Public outreach on sustainable living and sale of exotic and organic fruit and herb seedlings.

  3. Tree planting campaigns across Tamale, Ghana.

HOW WE MAKE CHANGE

EcoWillow Ghana were looking for volunteers to help them with Design, Marketing, Fundraising and Web Development in order to address the Sustainable Development Goals of Climate Action (SDG 13) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

We connected them with skilled ChangeMakers. Here’s how they have helped 🙌

“THE EXPERIENCE HAS GIVEN ME A BOOST OF CONFIDENCE IN MY ABILITIES, REMINDED ME OF MY PASSION FOR SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS, AND ALLOWED ME TO MAKE LIFE-LONG CONNECTIONS”

Emma McCartney 🇮🇪

‘My name is Emma and I am from Ireland. I am a Design Engineering student, and my goal is to make a positive impact in crafting a more sustainable future. The events over the last year have given me a lot of perspective and pushed me to reach out to organisations, whose values align with my own, to see if there was a way we could help and learn from each other. I encourage others to use their knowledge and experience to help others. We can accomplish so much as a team!

At EcoWillow Ghana, I’ve had the opportunity to use my design experience to invigorate their branding. I developed a new logo, a series of brochures, promotional material, letterheads, and designed their Green Schools Project proposal. Collaborating with Lead Strategist Selorm Adzimah, I got the chance to learn more about the process, logistics, and hard work which goes on behind the scenes.

Working closely on a project with passionate people I otherwise would never have gotten a chance to meet has been life changing. It can often feel like you aren’t ready or qualified enough to take the leap and volunteer your services, especially when the number of designers feels so vast right now. Volunteering through companies such as We Make Change allows you to work with real companies, and walk away knowing you have made a positive impact in the world. It has given me a boost of confidence in my abilities, reminded me of my passion for sustainable business, and allowed me to make life-long connections.’

“NOW I CAN USE MY EDUCATION AND SKILLS TO VOLUNTEER IN THE LONG TERM”

ZUZANA RUTTKAYOVA 🇸🇰

‘My name is Zuzana and I am originally from Slovakia. I’ve lived (mostly) in Denmark the past 6 years and currently in my last semester of the marketing master's degree at Aarhus University and throughout the years I've managed to work in Spain, London and Denmark too in various industries and in different marketing areas. I believe that gives me a lot of knowledge that can be used for a good cause such as volunteering in the marketing area. My hobbies are art, music and photography and I love traveling!

At EcoWillow Ghana, I’ve used design to create social media posts for the organisation and will use writing skills on their blog on the website. I use research to find the fundraising organisations, how to approach them, how to improve the website and how to help the company in general.

It hasn't been long yet with EcoWillow Ghana, but I plan to stick around. I've always had the urge to help and was involved in short-term projects and usually not connected to marketing – we'd help out on music festivals or collect garbage at the beaches. Now I can use my education and skills to volunteer in the long term. It is a great feeling to give and help especially for an organisation that is involved in organic farming or sustainability as that is a big part of my personal life’

“Our organization moved from no website, no proper marketing and fundraising strategy, standard graphic designing and branding to having it all through We Make Change ChangeMakers across the globe. We are extremely happy with the work done and we are well positioned to go further.”
