HOW CHANGEMAKERS HELPED EMPOWER WOMEN-LED BUSINESSES IN AFRICA

MKCurvy seeks to leverage the digital space to market designs produced under their brand in Africa by mainly African women to a global marketplace. The enterprise seeks to put funds into the hands of women through their supply chain to ensure better socioeconomic outcomes for families.

So often women are overwhelmed by the hardships that often comes with gender inequity that they forget to love and invest in themselves. Their enterprise emphasises self-love as the building block to a woman's success personally and professionally. Their hope is to provide opportunities and training such as digital skills workshops, skills to build a sustainable business etc to empower the women who are in our production network and beyond.

At any given time, MKCurvy balances their portfolio to have their supply chain at 70% being women owned/led businesses. All of their production currently occurs in Africa. They also produce almost all of their pieces with a mix of African print as a nod to their production base and the work that they are undertaking. They pay a very fair price to their producers in order for them to be able to afford a decent standard of living ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒ

HOW WE MAKE CHANGE

MKCurvy were looking for volunteers to help them with Marketing, Web Development, Design, Business Development and Strategy in order to address the Sustainable Development Goals of Gender Equality (SDG 5) and Decent Work & Economic Growth (SDG 8).

We connected them with skilled ChangeMakers. Hereโ€™s how they have helped ๐Ÿ™Œ

โ€˜My name is Paola, and I am from Mexico but have now lived in Canada for three years where Iโ€™ve studied business marketing. I am currently working as a digital marketer for a Canadian tech company. Through We Make Change I was able to find opportunities where I could use my skills to make a change - I then joined MKCurvy!

At MKCurvy, I am the Social Media Manager. This means that I develop content for their different social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.

I love the experience of working with MKCurvy. Iโ€™ve learned a lot more about marketing and every day I feel inspired by the growth of MKCurvy and really appreciate the opportunity to be a part of change and support this great cause.โ€™

โ€˜My name is Andrea and I am from Venezuela. I moved to Canada two years ago to study interior decorating which I now do professionally. Iโ€™ve been working in a staging company as well as doing online courses to learn more about marketing and social media content creation.

At MKCurvy, Iโ€™ve had the opportunity to use my creativity to create content for MKCurvyโ€™s social media platforms and engage with the audience. Iโ€™ve also had the opportunity to help MKCurvy with branding.

Itโ€™s been amazing working with Amaka. I really enjoy using my skills to make a difference while growing professionally.โ€™
